WORKSHOPS During the PANDEMIC
How things will work at Yellow Brick Lab as of September 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic makes it necessary for us to adjust our Health & Safety protocols and our operation in general, as the wellbeing of children attending our workshops is our top priority.
We have worked hard these past few months to make sure that we can provide a safe and enjoyable environment in our workshops for all children & our staff / helpers. Following the scientific information available about the virus we have adjusted our operation to meet strict health & safety criteria and the Government’s public health guidelines. Therefore, our workshops will be run in a slightly different manner as of September 2020 and until further notice.
Each weekly session will start as usual on the designated day, time and venue and will have the same duration (80-90 minutes). Sadly, only a limited number of spaces (max. 10 per group) can be made available due to our distancing setup. There is a possibility of revising upwards this number later in the term should it is safe to do so.
Before joining the workshop, children will be expected to either thoroughly wash their hands or use disinfectant solution and make their way to the hall where they will be taking their seats without making any physical contact with their peers.
The children will not be working in teams or groups anymore. They will be engaging with their dedicated LEGO robotics set, seated individually at the same pre-cleaned workstation (table) every week, facing all in the same direction. The workstations will be spaced apart at a safe distance from each other. It will still be fun, however interaction with their peers will be limited.
There will be no breaks for other reason than toilet breaks, which means there will be no snack time after the beginning of the workshop until further notice.
The same members of staff will be in contact with each group throughout the term’s sessions in order to comply with the NHS Track & Trace guidelines.
All equipment (LEGO sets & tablet computers) used by the children will be disinfected prior and after every use with ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI).
UVGI is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (ultraviolet C or UV-C) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms including COVID-19 (more information can be found here). This is a hospital grade disinfection process approved by the NHS and Yellow Brick Lab has invested in a UVGI chamber in order to sanitise all the sets after every single use.
This investment as well as the related processual costs are the main reasons for the increase of the per session fees by 50 pence as of this term. We endeavour to readjust the costs as soon as our operations return to their normal routine.
Hygiene of staff / helpers
Sessions will be run only if all staff is well in their health and it is safe to get in contact with the children. There will be face masks and latex gloves worn by all staff getting in touch with the children throughout the workshop.
Pick up process
Children will be released to their parents/carers in alphabetical order after the end of each session. Pick up will start once the session concludes at the door of the building. The children will be seated at their workstations and released one by one to avoid contact with others and in order to prevent congestion of parents at the door.
If a parent/carer is not present to pick up their child when called, that child will be placed at the end of the list and released after everybody else has left. As this will be a lengthy process, please factor that in your pick up arrangements.
Given that we have to operate at a reduced number of children per group we are not in a position to fully satisfy the demand. The booking system for the new school year will change and will run EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE on our website in a dedicated section. In order to gain access you will need to sign up. Spaces will be made available on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis to children aged 5 or older. The booking platform will open no sooner than Saturday 1st August 2020 at 9:00am BST for some locations and we will add more locations as soon as we can get the necessary confirmations from the venues.
We will not accept any bookings by email and we apologise for the inconvenience. Please BOOK ONLINE ONLY timely. Once the spaces are all booked we will operate a waiting list as usual for potential vacancies. So if you don’t manage to book please get in touch to get your child’s name on the waiting list.
As always we are available and happy to answer any queries you might have regarding the workshops and our operation.
We apologise if all the above is long and feels a bit regimented. The logistics behind providing a safe environment for the children require us to think ahead for every detail. Having said that there is always space for tweaking the process and we will be trying to improve it as we go. If you have any concerns or if you’d like to make any suggestion, we are happy to hear from you.
We wish you all to have a great summer break and we hope to see you again in the new school year!
